The Deutsch-Amerikanische Juristen-Vereinigung (DAJV e.V.) - German-American Lawyers' Association cordially invites you to a Panel Discussion "Under Pressure - The Resilience of the Rule of Law in Modern Democracies” Monday, May 6, 2024, 4:00–5:30 p.m., German Embassy 4645 Reservoir Road, NW, Washington, DC 20007 The Embassy of Germany in Washington, D.C., the German Federal Bar Association (Bundesrechtsanwaltskammer), the American Bar Association, and the World Justice Project are pleased to invite you to this panel discussion, which is held on the occasion of US National Holocaust Remembrance Day and the exhibition 'Lawyers Without Rights: Jewish Lawyers in Germany under the Third Reich'. Western democracies are increasingly challenged by political movements and individuals coopting democratic processes for their non-democratic purposes. The rule of law is being attacked with its own “weapons” in order to achieve certain political goals. The constitutional power of the judiciary and basic rights are being undermined, often under the pretext of saving these guarantees. The methods are very much reminiscent of fascist regimes, which in the end led to the destruction of democracies, the rule of law, basic rights and civilizational achievements. How strong is the rule of law in our modern democracies to resist these threats? What can the people, politicians and lawyers do to prevent the rule of law from becoming the “victim of its own weapons”? The Panel brings together legal professionals from the academy, judiciary, and advocacy field from both sides of the Atlantic to discuss these urgent questions and to take a look at the current debates in Europe and the US – two longstanding pillars of the rule of law and democracy in the world.
